About Gwandu Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Gwandu local government area is in Kebbi state, Northwest Nigeria and has its administrative headquarters in the town of Birnin Kebbi. The LGA comprises of several towns and villages such as Dalijan, Gwandu, Kambaza, Kwazgara, Gora, Maruda, Tufara, and Gumbai. The estimated population of Gwandu LGA is 151,633 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace made up of members of the Fulani and Kebbawa ethnic divisions. The Fufulde language and Kebbawa dialect are extensively spoken in the area while the religion of Islam is commonly practiced in the area. Gwandu LGA is home to the prestigious Gwandu Emirate with the Emir serving as the traditional Administrator of the area. Notable landmarks in Gwandu LGA include the Tomb of Abdullahi Fodio who is the son of the renowned Jihadist Uthman Dan Fodio.


GEOGRAPHY OF GWANDU

Gwandu LGA lies near the Zamfara river and is characterized by a woodland vegetation with sparse distribution of trees. The LGA falls under the Sudan Savannah climate and has an average temperature of 32 degrees centigrade. The humidity level of the area is at an average of 26 percent while annual rainfall in the area averages 900 mm.


ECONOMY OF GWANDU

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Gwandu LGA with crops such as Groundnuts, tobacco, rice, millet, sorghum, onions, and kolanut grown in large quantities in the area. Trade also booms in the area with the LGA hosting several markets such as the Dodoru market where the area’s dwellers go to buy and sell a plethora of commodities. Other important economic activities that are popular in Gwandu LGA include cattle rearing and the making and sales of the popular Kilishi snack.
