About Kebbi State

Kebbi state is found in the NorthWest geopolitical zone of Nigeria and is bordered by Sokoto, Niger, Zamfara and Niger Republic. Kebbi state has its capital at Birnin Kebbi with other prominent towns in the state including Dandi, Gwandu, Shanga and Argungu which is popular for its annual international fishing festival. Tertiary Institutions in Kebbi state include the Adamu Augie College of Education Argungu, College of agriculture abd Animal husbandry Zuru, Kebbi state University of science and technlogy Aliero, Waziri Umaru Federal Polytechnic, Kebbi state polytechnic Dakingri, and the Federal University Birnin Kebbi.   

Kebbi state has a total of 21 LGAs which include Aleiro, Arewa Dandi, Argungu, Augie, Bagudo,Birnin Kebbi, Bunza, Dandi, Fakai, Gwandu, Jega, Kalgo, Koko, Besse, Maiyama, Ngaski, Sakaba, Shanga, Suru, Danko, Wasagu, Yauri and Zuu and four emirates namely the Kebbi, Gwandu, Yauri and Zuru. The population of Kebbi state is estimated at 3,238,629 inhabitants with the dominant tribes being the Hausa, Fulani, Bussawa, Kambari and Kambuku. Other ethnic groups found in Kebbi state include the Lelna, Dukawa, Dakarkari, and the Gingawa while Islam is the most widely practiced religion in the state.

Popular landmarks in Kebbi state include the tomb of Abdullahi Fodio, the Kanta Museum in Argungu, Karishi traditional settlement and the Girmashe shrine in Zuru. Popular festivals held in Kebbi state include the Uhola festival and the Argungu fishing festival. Health facilities found in Kebbi state include the Federal Medical Center Birnin Kebbi, DDG Medical center Birnin Kebbi,  Godiya hospital, Sir Yahaya memorial hospital, General Hospital Argungu, General hospital Bunza, General hospital Zumel, and the Al-Histafabah hospital.

GEOGRAPHY OF KEBBI STATE

Kebbi state has features of both the sudan and sahel savannah with a total area of 36,800 km squared. The annual precipitation is estimated at 900 mm with an average temperature of 35 degrees centigrade.

The topography consists of undulating lands and small hills with humidity estimated at 33 percent.


ECONOMY OF KEBBI STATE

Agriculture provides the major economic activity for the inhabitants of Kebbi state with crops such as rice, beans, maize and millet produced in large quantities. Also, fishing and Animal rearing are also engaged in by the state’s inhabitants. There are a number of markets in Kebbi state and these include the Yauri, Argungu, Bunza, Yauri international Onion market, Birnin Kebbi rice mrket, Karan market and the Suru main market.

The internationally acclaimed Argungu fishing festival also contributes massively to the economy of Kebbi state with the festival attracting thousands of visitors from different parts of Nigeria and abroad annually. Mineral resources found in Kebbi state include salt, iron ore, Gold,Feldspar, Limestone, Quartz, Bauxitic clay, Manganese, Kaolin, and Mica.   

HISTORY OF KEBBI STATE

Kebbi state was created in 1991 from Sokoto state with Patrick Aziza as the state’s pioneer administrator from 1991-1992. Past governors/ administrators in Kebbi state include

Salihu Tunde Bello- 1993-1996

John Ubah- 1996-1998

Samaila Bature Chamah- 1998-1999

Adamu Aliero- 1999-2007

Aminu Musa Jega- 2012 till date.
