About Ikeja Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ikeja is the capital city of Lagos state and also one of the twenty LGAs in Lagos state, Southwest Nigeria. The LGA is majorly an urban area and consists of districts such as Magodo, Oregun, Alausa, Ogba, Akiode, Opebi, GRA, and Agidingbi. The estimated population of Ikeja LGA is 411,228 inhabitants with the area comprising of members of diverse ethnic affiliations. The Yoruba and English languages are commonly spoken in the area while Christianity and Islam are extensively practiced in the area. Ikeja LGA hosts several landmarks which include the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, the Ikeja Bus terminal, the New Afrika Shrine founded by the late Fela Anikulapo uti and Motherlan owned by Music maestro, Lagbaja.


Ikeja LGA has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade and covers a total area of 50 square kilometres. The total precipitation in the area is at an average of 2150 mm of rainfall per annum while the LGA has an average humidity level of 70 percent. Average wind speed in Ikeja LGA is 12 km/h.


Ikeja LGA is a cosmopolitan and ultra-urban center and has the presence of several banks, hotels, relaxation spots, and institutions both publicly and privately owned. Ikeja LGA hosts a number of markets which contribute immensely to the economy of the area and these include the very popular Computer Village and the Alausa main market. Also, Ikeja LGA hosts several shopping centers such as the Maryland and Ikeja city Malls.


Ikeja LGA was created in the year 1976 and was made capital city of Lagos state in the same year.
