About Kanam Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Kanam local government area is domiciled in Plateau state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Dengi. Towns and villages that make up Kanam LGA include Dengi, Kanam, Garga, Kantana, Tunga, Kukawa, Gwarong, and Yipmong. The estimated population of Kanam LGA is put at 199,213 inhabitants with the area hosting members of different ethnic affiliations such as the Berom and the Jukun. The Boghom and Hausa languages are some of the languages spoken in Kanam LGA with the religions of Christianity and Islam practiced in the area. Kanam LGA hosts the Kanam Emirate and has a number of chiefdoms such as the Jhar Chiefdom under its territory.


GEOGRAPHY OF KANAM

Kanam LGA occupies a total area of 2,600 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The LGA witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average humidity level of Kanam LGA is 62 percent with average wind speed in the area put at 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF KANAM

A number of mineral deposits are found in Kanam LGA and these include tin, columbite, and a few precious stones. The area also has a viable trade sector with the LGA hosting a number of markets where a large number of commodities are sold. Farming is also a critical part of the economy of Kanam LGA with crops such as salads, irish potatoes, and tomatoes grown in substantially large quantities within the area.
