About Kanke Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Kanke local government area is situated within Plateau state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The LGA has its headquarters in the town of Kwal and is made up of a number of towns and villages such as Garram, Kabwir, Ampang, Amper, Pai, Pal, Dambi, Lawatang, and Gugur. The estimated population of Kanke LGA is put at 208,673 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Ngas tribe. The Ngas language is commonly spoken in the LGA while Christianity and Islam are the widely practiced religions in the area. The Ngolong Ngas is the paramount traditional ruler in Kanke LGA and superintends over the traditional affairs of the Area.


GEOGRAPHY OF KANKE

Kanke LGA occupies a total area of 926 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The area witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons while the average humidity level in the LGA is put at 59 percent.


ECONOMY OF KANKE

Trade is an important feature of the economy of Kanke LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the popular Danwaki market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. The area is also an agricultural hub with crops such as onions, tomatoes, potatoes and salads grown in large quantities within the area. Other important economic activities undertaken by the people of Kanke LGA include blacksmithing, mining, and hunting.
