About Ayamelum Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ayamelum local government area is in Anambra state which is domiciled in the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA is at Anaku and the area features a number of towns and villages which include Umueje, Igbakwu, Anaku, Umuerum, Ifite, Ogwari, Omasi and Umumbo. The major tribe in Ayamelum LGA is the Igbo ethnic group with the Igbo and English languages spoken extensively within the area. The population of Ayamelum LGA is put at 121,855 inhabitants with Christianity as the major religious affiliation of the area’s dwellers. Ayamelum LGA is home to a number of prestigious and indigenous festivals which include the Ofalla festival, the Obubezi festival, and the Olila aka festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF AYAMELUM

Ayamelum LGA features two distinct seasons which are the dry season and the rainy season. The area has a humidity of 70 percent while the average temperature is put at 27 degrees centigrade. Wind speed of Ayamelum LGA is estimated at 11 km/ h while the area comprises of a number of rivers and tributaries such as the Omambala river and the Ezu river.


ECONOMY OF AYAMELUM

Agriculture is key to the economic lives of the inhabitants of Ayamelum LGA with a large percentage of the area’s dwellers engaging in both subsistence and commercial farming. Crops grown in Ayamelum include Yam, cassava, cocoyam and a variety of vegetables. Fishing and trade are other important and popular economic engagements of the people of Ayamelum LGA.
