About Idemili South Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Idemili south LGA is situated in Anambra state, Southeast Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Ojoto. Idemili south LGA shares boundaries with Idemili North, Anaocha, Nnewi North, Ekwusigo and Ogbaru local government areas. The towns and villages that make up Idemili south LGA include Umunachi, Umudioka, Nnobi, Alor, Oba, Akwaukwu, Nnokwa, and Awka-etiti. The estimated population of Idemili South LGA is 159,631 inhabitants with the area’s populace made up of a majority of Igbo people. The Igbo language is extensively spoken in the LGA while Christianity is the widely practiced religion in the area. Popular festivals celebrated in Idemili south LGA include the New Yam and the Ofala festivals.


GEOGRAPHY OF IDEMILI SOUTH

Idemili south LGA has a total area of 700 square kilometres and has the River Idemili flowing within its territory. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons with average temperature of the area put at 25 degrees centigrade. Idemili south LGA has an average humidity level of 69 percent with an average wind speed of 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF IDEMILI SOUTH

Farming is a key economic activity in Idemili south LGA with crops such as vegetables, cassava, yam, and rice cultivated in the area. The LGA also hosts a number of markets such as the Afor Nnobi market and the Ezeihulu market. Idemili South LGA also hosts a number of hotels, banks and publicly and privately owned institutions.

HISTORY OF IDEMILI SOUTH

Idemili south LGA was created in the year 1989 from the old Idemili LGA.
