About Awka South Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Awka South local government area is located in Anambra state which is situated in the Southeast geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA is at Amawbia while the area consists of towns such as Amawbia, Mbaukwu, Umuawulu, Okpuno, Nise, Nibo, and Ezinato. The population of Anambra South LGA is estimated at 106, 142 inhabitants with a vast majority of this number being members of the Igbo ethnic group.

The Igbo and English languages are commonly spoken in the area while Christianity and traditional religion are the main religious affiliations in the area. The area has a very rich cultural heritage as evidenced by the periodic celebration of indigenous festivals such as the New Yam festival and the Ezike Day Festival in Nibo. Landmarks in Awka South local government area include the Anambra Governor’s lodge, the Anambra state prisons and the WAEC state headquarters.

Awka South local government area features two distinct seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons with estimated total precipitation of the area put at 2950 mm. Average humidity in Awka South is pegged at 70 percent while the average temperature of the area is at 27 degrees centigrade.


ECONOMY OF AWKA SOUTH

Farming is the major economic engagement of the Awka South local government area inhabitants with crops like yam, maize, cocoyam, and cassava grown in fairly large quantities. Commerce also thrives within the area with markets such as the Eke market in Nibo and the Awka capital Territory Modern Market in Isiagu attracting thousands of buyers and sellers of various commodities.
