Oyi

Oyi local government area is situated within Anambra state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA in the town of Nteje. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Ogbunike, Umuneba, Umunya, Nteje, Nkwelle, and Awkuzu. The current estimated population of Oyi LGA is put at 249,448 inhabitants with the area mostly populated by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. A number of colourful festivals are held in Oyi LGA and these include the Ofala and Isigwu festivals while notable landmarks in the area include the popular Ogbunike Cave which is a UNESCO World heritage site.

Oyi LGA has an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade with the area hosting the popular Oyi River from which the LGA derives its name. The area also hosts the popular Ogba hills which overlook the Ogbunike cave.

ECONOMY OF OYI

Oyi LGA is a hub for trade with the area hosting several markets which include the Modern Aluminium market in Ogbunike. Agriculture is also an important economic activity in Oyi LGA with crops such as rice, yam, cassava, and breadfruit grown in the area. The LGA is also known for economic activities such as fishing, animal rearing, and hunting.
