About Awka North Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Awka North local government area is domiciled in Anambra state, Southeast zone of Nigeria. The area is home to the Igbo ethnic group and comprises a number of towns and villages which include Awba, Ofemili, Ugbene, Ebenebe, Amansea, Ugbenu, and Mgbakwu. The headquarters of the LGA is situated in the town of Achalla and has Christianity as the widely practiced religion.

The population of Awka North LGA is put at 124,850 inhabitants with the Igbo and English languages spoken extensively within the area. Awka North LGA is home to a number of landmarks which include the Iyi-Enu hospital while colourful festivals such as the Iwa-Ji and Imoka festivals are held periodically within the area.


Awka North local government area features two distinct seasons which are the rainy and dry seasons with estimated total precipitation of the area put at 2950 mm. Average humidity in Awka North is pegged at 70 percent while the average temperature of the area is at 27 degrees centigrade.


Agriculture is an important economic feature of the Awka North local government area with crops such as rice, yam, cassava, and maize cultivated within the area. The inhabitants of Awka North also engage in Fishing on the many rivers and tributaries that make up the area while trading is also a key economic feature of the area with markets such as the Eke Awka and Aforigwe markets provide veritable platforms for the exchange of a wide range of goods and services.
