Ikeduru

Ikeduru local government area is in Imo state, Southeast Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Iho. The LGA is bordered by the Mbaitolu, Isiala Mbano, Ahiazu Mbaise and Owerri north LGA s. Towns and villages that make up Ikeduru LGA include Amakohia, Inyishi, Amaimo, Umudum, Uzoagba, Ikembara, Atta, and Akabo. The estimated population of Ikeduru LGA is 134,730 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is widely spoken in the area while Christianity is the commonly practiced religion in the LGA. Notable festivals held in Ikeduru LGA include the New Yam and the Okposhi festivals while landmarks in the area include the Amakohia Girls Secondary School and the Amaraku power plant.

GEOGRAPHY OF IKEDURU

Ikeduru LGA covers a total area of 179 square kilometres and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy season. The area hosts several rivers and tributaries and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. Ikeduru LGA has an average wind speed of 10 km/h.

ECONOMY OF IKEDURU

Farming is an important feature of the economy of Ikeduru LGA with crops such as oil palm, cassava, cocoyam, and maize grown in the area. The LGA also hosts a number of markets such as the Atta and the Ekeonumiri markets. A number of mineral resources such as phosphate, limestone, and kaolin are also found in Ikeduru LGA.

Ikeduru LGA was created from the defunct Mbaitolu/Ikeduru LGA in the year 1989.
