About Obowo Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Obowo local government area is found in Imo state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Otoko. Obowo LGA is bordered by the Ahiazu, Aboh Mbaise LGAs and by parts of Abia state. The towns and villages that make up Obowo LGA include Umuokeh, Amuzi, Odenkwume, Okwuohia, Alike, Umulogho, Otoko, and Umungwa. The current estimated population of Obowo LGA is put at 188,612 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is extensively spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Popular festivals held in Obowo LGA include the Iwa akwa and Mbomuzo festivals while the notable landmarks in the area include the Umuanam Game Reserve.


GEOGRAPHY OF OBOWO

Obowo LGA has an average temperature of 26 degrees centigrade with the area hosting large swaths of forest land. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the total precipitation in the area estimated at 2000 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF OBOWO

Farming is a key feature of the economy of Obowo LGA with crops such as oil palm and cassava grown in the area. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting several markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other economic engagements of the people of Obowo LGA include food processing, lumbering and welding.

Obowo LGA was created in May 1989.
