About Oru East Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Oru east local government area is situated in Imo state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA domiciled in the town of Omuma. The LGA is bordered by the Njaba, Mbaitoli, Orlu, Oguta, Orsu, and Oru west LGAs. The towns and villages that make up Oru east LGA include Ofekatai, Omuma, Amiri, Akatta, Akuma, Eziawo, and Awommamma. The current estimated population of Oru east LGA is put at 184,880 inhabitants with the area primarily populated by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Popular festivals held in Oru East LGA include the Oru-Owerre festival while the notable landmarks in the LGA include the Addax Petroleum.


GEOGRAPHY OF ORU EAST

Oru east LGA covers a total area of 136 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA is home to several rivers and streams with the average humidity level in the area put at 60 percent.


ECONOMY OF ORU EAST

Trade is an important economic activity in Oru east LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Afor Market in Akatta where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. The LGA also has a rich agricultural heritage with crops such as cassava, oil palm, pear, and maize cultivated in large quantities within the area. Mineral deposits in Oru east LGA include crude oil and natural gas.
