About Nkwerre Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Nkwerre local government area is situated in Imo state, South-east Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Nkwerre. Nkwerre LGA comprises of several towns and villages such as Owerre Nkworji, Eziama, Obaire, Amaokpara, Umunwala, Umuduru, Amaigbo, Obinocha, and Oforie. The estimated population of Nkwerre LGA is put at 169,442 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The   Igbo language is predominantly spoken in Nkwerre LGA while the religion of Christianity is commonly practiced in the area. There are a number of prominent traditional rulers in Nkwerre LGA and these include the Eshi of Nkwerre while popular festivals celebrated in the LGA include the Opiegbe festival. Notable landmarks in Nkwerre LGA include the NYSC permanent Orientation Camp.


GEOGRAPHY OF NKWERRE

Nkwerre LGA occupies a total area of 38 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees   centigrade. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average humidity level in Nkwerre LGA is put at 64 percent.


ECONOMY OF NKWERRE

Farming is an important part of the economy of Nkwerre LGA with crops such as cassava, yam, oil palm and vegetables grown in the area. Trade also booms in the area with the LGA hosting several markets which serve as veritable platforms for the exchange of a variety of commodities. Other important economic activities undertaken by people of Nkwerre LGA include wood work, welding, and auto repairs.
