About Onuimo Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Onuimo local government area is one of the twenty-seven LGAs in Imo state, South-east geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Okwe and the LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Okwelle, Alaike, Umuodumodu, Uhi, Umuduru, Ofeahia, Umuna, Ezelu, and Diakuma. The estimated population of Onuimo LGA is put at 169,433 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. A number of festivals are celebrated in Onuimo LGA and these include the Ikeji, and the Nkwo Okwe day festivals. Prominent traditional rulers in Onuimo LGA include the Anyabuike of Diakuma.


GEOGRAPHY OF ONUIMO

Onuimo LGA occupies a total area of 87 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The area hosts a number of rivers and streams flowing through its territory with the average wind speed in the LGA put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF ONUIMO

Onuimo LGA has a vibrant trade sector and hosts a number of markets such as the Okwe Onimo town market which attracts hundreds of buyers and sellers of diverse commodities. The LGA also has a rich agricultural heritage and is known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as oil palm, maize, yam, cassava, as well as a variety of fruits and vegetables. Other occupations of the people of Onuimo LGA include hunting, animal rearing, and welding.
