About Oru West Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Oru west local government area is found in Imo state, South-east geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Mgbidi and the LGA is bordered by the Oguta and the Oru east LGAs and by parts of Anambra state. Towns and villages that make up Oru west LGA include Amaofuo, Nempi, Ohakpu, Ubulu, Ozara, Otulu, Eleh, Aji, and Mgbidi. The LGA has an estimated population of 115,504 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s populace constituted by members of the Igbo ethnic group. The Igbo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. A number of festivals are held in Oru west LGA and these include the Owu festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF ORU WEST

Oru west LGA covers a total area of 93 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA has the Njaba and Awbana Rivers flowing through its territory while the area has an estimated average wind speed of 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF ORU WEST

Oru west LGA is rich in reserves of crude oil and natural gas with the activities of oil mining firms in the area contributing massively to the economy of the LGA. Trade blossoms in Oru west LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Eke Mgbidi market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities engaged in by people of Oru west LGA include farming, hunting, and craftsmanship.
