About Ajaokuta Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ajaokuta local government is found in Kogi state, Northcentral Nigeria. The LGA has its headquarters in the town of Egayin and consists of towns and villages such as Agarugu, Ebiya, Epiri, Achagana, Idire, Ohunene, and Shagana. The dominant ethnic affiliations in Ajaokuta LGA include the Ogori, the Ebira and the Igala while Islam and Christianity are the widely practiced religions in the area. 

Ajaokuta LGA has a rich cultural heritage with the areas inhabitants holding festivals such as the Semba festival, Ovia festival, and the Ebira festival at regular intervals. Popular landmarks in Ajaokuta local government area include the multi-million dollar Ajaokuta Steel Mill and the massive Ajaokuta forest reserves.

Ajaokuta local government area covers a total area of 1,362 km squared with average wind speed at 8 km/h. The area has an estimated humidity of 63 percent while average temperature is pegged at 31 degrees centigrade. There are two distinct seasons in Ajaokuta LGA and these are the rainy and the dry seasons.


ECONOMY OF AJAOKUTA

Ajaokuta local government area is popular for the cultivation of crops such as yam, rice, millet and cocoyam with trade also being a viable economic engagement for the area’s dwellers. The area has a large number of markets with the New market being the most patronized in the local government area. The Ajaokuta LGA also has the presence of Nigeria's largest steel producing industry; the Ajaokuta steel company.
