About Ijumu Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ijumu local government area is in Kogi state, Northcentral Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Iyara. The LGA comprises of several towns and villages which include Aduge, Arima, Otungba, Kakuma, Iluagba, Igo-Igere, Iyamoye, Egbeda Egga, and Ogidi.  Ijumu LGA has a number of prominent traditional rulers which include the Ologidi of Ogidi and the Olujumu of Ijumu. The estimated population of Ijumu LGA is 171,308 inhabitants with the area’s major inhabitants being members of the Okun ethnic sub-division. The Okun dialect of the Yoruba language is predominantly spoken in the area while Christianity and Islam are the commonly practiced religions in the LGA. A number of indigenous festivals are held in Ijumu LGA and these include the Ogidi day and Yam festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF IJUMU

Ijumu LGA sits on a total area of 1,306 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The area is characterized by a litter of igneous rock mountains. Ijumu LGA also falls within the Tropical forest and Savannah zones and has an average humidity level of 69 percent.


ECONOMY OF IJUMU

Ijumu LGA is popular for the cultivation of a number of crops such as coffee, cocoa, cashew, maize, sweet potato, and kolanut. Also, a number of domestic animals such as sheep and goats are reared in the area. Ijumu LGA also hosts several markets which provide the platform for the exchange of a wide variety of goods and services for the people of the area.
