About Okehi Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Okehi local government area is in Kogi state, North-central geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Obangede with the LGA sharing boundaries with the Adavi, Lokoja, Akoko edo and Kabba-Bunu LGAs. The towns and villages that make up Okehi LGA include Erika, Ihima, Ikuehi, Ohueta, Okaito, Omavi,Uboro, and Obangede. The estimated population of Okehi LGA is put at 184,732 inhabitants with the area mostly populated by members of the Egbira ethnic group. The Egbira language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area. Festivals celebrated in Okehi LGA include the Ichekane, Uhene, and Echene festivals.


GEOGRAPHY OF OKEHI

Okehi LGA covers a total area of 661 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 29 degrees centigrade. The LGA hosts a number of hills and valleys with the average wind speed in the area put at 11 km/h. Okehi LGA falls within the tropical wet and dry climate zone with the average humidity level in the area put at 55 percent.


ECONOMY OF OKEHI

Okehi LGA is rich in mineral deposits such as iron ore, gemstone, and clay. The LGA has a boisterous trade sector with the area hosting several markets where a plethora of commodities are bought and sold. A number of crops are grown in the LGA while a variety of domestic animals are also reared in the area.

HISTORY OF OKEHI

Okehi LGA was created in 1976 from the defunct Ebira Local Division.
