About Bassa Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Bassa local government area is located within Plateau state Northcentral Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Bassa. Bassa LGA is bordered by Kaduna and Bauchi states and features a number of towns and villages which include Rimi,Sarkishau, Jere, Biyi, Tariya, Janji, Zarama, Mafara, and Kishika. The major tribes in Bassa LGA are the Bassa and the Irigwe with Christianity and Islam as the major religions in the area. The population of Bassa LGA is put at 132,107 inhabitants with several languages which include English and Hausa spoken in the area. A number of popular festivals are held in Bassa LGA and these include the Irigwe cultural festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF BASSA

Bassa LGA occupies a total area of 1743 square kilometres and features two distinct seasons; the rainy and the dry seasons. The average temperature of the area is put at 29 degrees centigrade with humidity pegged at 45 percent.


ECONOMY OF BASSA

Bassa local government area has a rich agricultural heritage with crops such as onions, Irish potatoes and tomatoes grown in the area. Trade is also a critical feature of Bassa’s economy with markets such as the Jengre and Kawam markets attracting several buyers and sellers. Other key features of the economic life of Bassa LGA include hunting, pottery and blacksmithing.
