About Ika South Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ika South local government area is in Delta state which is found in the South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria. Theheadquarters of the LGA are in the town of Agbor while the LGA comprises of several towns and villages which include Ewuru, Idumuoza, Alifekede, Agbor-obi, Alizormo, Emuhu, Oki, and Omumu. Ika south LGA has a number of traditional rulers such as the Dein and the Obi of Agbor. The estimated population of Ika south LGA is 185,613 inhabitants with the dominant tribal affiliation in the LGA being the Ika sub-division. The Ika dialect of the Igbo language is spoken in the area while Christianity is the commonly practiced religion in the area. A number of festivals are celebrated in Ika south LGA and these include the Igue, Iwa-ji, and Oseizi festivals.


GEOGRAPHY OF IKA SOUTH

Ika south LGA covers a total area of 436 square kilometres and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the LGA is 26 degrees centigrade while the total precipitation in the area is at an average of 2400 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF IKA SOUTH

Farming is a major economic activity in Ika south LGA with a variety of crops grown in the area. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Nkwor market in Agbor –obi where a variety of commodities are bought and sold.Other important economic enterprises undertaken by people of Ika South LGA include fishing, hunting and wood work.
