About Uruan Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Uruan local government area is found in Akwa Ibom state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Idu and the LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Emam, Anakpa, Ibikpe, Idu, Ekim Enen, Ikot Ese, Mbiakong, Nwaniba, and Use. The population of Uruan LGA is estimated to be around 163,772 inhabitants with the LGA predominantly occupied by members of the Uruan ethnic group. The Uruan language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Notable landmarks in Uruan LGA include the Le Meridien Ibom Hotel and Golf Course/ Resort.


GEOGRAPHY OF URUAN

Uruan LGA occupies a total area of 449 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The LGA falls within the rainforest belt and hosts a number of rivers, streams, creeks, and rivulets. A number of hills area also found in Uruan LGA with the area also having substantial amounts of forest reserves.


ECONOMY OF URUAN

Uruan LGA has a number of mineral deposits which include crude oil and natural gas, glass sand, limestone, clay, and sulphur nitrate. Fishing also thrives in Uruan LGA with the area’s water bodies being laden with seafood. Other important economic activities that take place in Uruan LGA include mining, farming, trade, lumbering, and hunting.

HISTORY OF URUAN

Uruan LGA was created in the year 1988 from the Uyo LGA.
