About Eket Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Eket local government area is found in Akwa Ibom state, Southsouth Nigeria and is bordered by Nsit ubium, Esit Eket, Onna and Ibeno local government areas. The towns and villages that make up the Eket LGA include Afaha ukwa, Esit urua, Idung Offiong, Odio, Iko ekwa, Effoi, Edebuk, and Ikot Udota. The population of Eket local government area is estimated at 91,855 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Ekid ethnic sub-division. The Ekid dialect is widely spoken in the area while Christianity is mostly practiced by the area’s inhabitants. Eket LGA is home to a number of festivals which include the Ekpe festival and the Ekid Cultural festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF EKET

Eket LGA sits on a total area of 214 square kilometres and has the Qua Iboe river flowing through the area. Eket LGA falls under the Tropical Monsoon climate and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade with the humidity level of the area averaging 93 percent.


ECONOMY OF EKET

Large amounts of crude oil and natural gas deposits are found within and around Eket LGA and the oil mining activities of local and multinational oil companies contribute immensely to the economic development of the area. Trade also booms in Eket LGA with the area hosting several markets such as the Udua Affiong Etuk market and the Urua Nka market from where dwellers of the area can purchase a wide variety of commodities. Other important economic activities of the people of Eket LGA include fishing, farming, and the making of fishing nets and canoes.

Eket local government area was created in the year 1976.
