About Ika Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ika local government area is in Akwa ibom state, Southsouth geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Urua Inyang while the LGA is bordered by the Etim Ekpo LGA and parts of Abia state. Towns and villages that make up Ika LGA include Achan Ika, Ikot Inwang, Ito, Nto Udoete, Iwukem, Edem Akai, Nto Usoh, and Ikot Ekong. The estimated population of Ika LGA is put at 89,078 inhabitants with the predominant dwellers of the area being members of the Annang ethnic sub-division. The Annang language is widely spoken in the area while Christianity is the commonly practiced religion in the area. A number of indigenous festivals are held in Ika LGA and these include the colourful Akakum festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF IKA

Ika LGA has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and rainy seasons with the rainy season lasting for much longer periods than the Dry season. The average humidity level in Ika LGA is 89 percent while average wind speed in the area is 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF IKA

A number of mineral resources are found in Ika LGA and these include deposits crude oil and natural gas. The LGA is also known for the cultivation of a variety of crops such as sugarcane, plantain, and oil palm. Ika LGA also hosts a number of markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Ika LGA include fishing and the construction of canoes.

HISTORY OF IKA

Ika LGA was created on the 4th day of December 1996 from the Abak LGA.
