About Ikono Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ikono local government area is situated in Akwa Ibom state, South-south geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. The LGA is bordered by the Ini, Abak, Uyo, Itu, and Ikot Ekpene LGAs and consists of several towns and villages which include Ibakesi, Ikot Ubeng, Odoro Ikpe, Uquok, Ibiaku, Asanting, Mbiafun, and Mbia Obong. The estimated population of Ikono LGA is put at 93,793 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Ibibio ethnic division. The Ibibio language is extensively spoken in the LGA while Christianity is the most practiced religion in the area. Popular festivals held in Ikono LGA include the Etefia and the New Yam festivals while popular indigenous cuisines enjoyed by the people of Ikono LGA include the Efere Nsana dish.


GEOGRAPHY OF IKONO

Ikono LGA occupies a total area of 407 square kilometres and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the LGA is put at 25 degrees centigrade while the total precipitation of the area is put at 3000 mm of rainfall per annum. The average wind speed of the area is 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF IKONO

Ikono LGA has deposits of mineral resources such as salt, sand, gravel and crude oil. Farming is also an important economic activity in Ikono LGA with crops such as oil palm, kolanut, cocoa, melon, maize, cassava, and plantain grown in fairly large quantities within the area. Trade also flourishes in Ikono LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Obo daily market. Other important economic activities engaged in by the people of Ikono LGA include fishing and lumbering.

HISTORY OF IKONO

Ikono LGA was created from the Itu LGA in September 1976.
