Okobo

Okobo local government area is in Akwa Ibom state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA residing in the town of Okopedi. The LGA is bordered by the Uruan, Oron, Nsit Atai, and Udung Uko LGAs and is made up of several towns and villages such as Okiuso, Ukwong, Eta, Odu, Atabong, Ibighi, Ebighi, and Ufok Esuk. The estimated population of Okobo LGA is put at 129,855 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Okobo ethnic group. The Okobo language is commonly spoken in the LGA while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Notable landmarks in Okobo LGA include the Odu College, Ebighi Edu and the Comprehensive Secondary School Ekeya Okobo.

The average humidity level in the area is put at 83 percent with the LGA having an average wind speed of 12 km/h. Also, several rivers and tributaries flow through the Okobo LGA.

Trade is an important feature of the economy of Okobo LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Atabong Beach market. Fishing is also an important economic enterprise in Okobo LGA with the area’s rivers and streams being rich in seafood. A number of crops such as oil palm, coconut, plantain, and sugarcane are grown in Okobo LGA.
