About Onna Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Onna local government area is situated within Akwa Ibom state, South-south geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The LGA is made up of several towns and villages which include Oniong, Nnung Ndem, Awa, Afaha, Ikot Idem Udo, Iquita, Ikot Ndua Iman, Ikot Nkan, and Ndon Eyo. The current estimated population of Onna LGA is put at 108,713 inhabitants with the area mostly populated by members of the Onna ethnic group. The Onna language is commonly spoken in the area while the religion of Christianity is commonly practiced in the LGA. A number of colourful festivals are held in Onna LGA and these include the Ekpo masquerade and the Ekpe festivals.

Onna LGA has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade with the area hosting several rivers and streams. The average humidity level in Onna LGA is put at 81 percent while the average wind speed in the area is at an estimated 11 km/h. Onna LGA also has vast forest reserves and lies close to the Atlantic Ocean.


ECONOMY OF ONNA

Onna LGA is rich in deposits of crude oil and natural gas with the area hosting several oil mining, refining and sales firms. Fishing is another key economic enterprise of the people of Onna LGA with the LGA’s several streams and rivers being rich in sea food. Other important economic activities undertaken by the people of Onna LGA include farming, lumbering, and the weaving of fishing nets.
