About Ibiono Ibom Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ibiono Ibom local government area is in Akwa Ibom state, Southsouth geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Oko Ita and is made up of towns and villages such as Idoro,Use Ndon, Ikpanya, Afua, Ididep, Usen Ikot, Afaha Obio Eno, and Mbiabong. The estimated population of Ibiono Ibom is 83,660 inhabitants with the area’s major dwellers being members of the Ibibio ethnic division. The Ibibio and Efik languages are commonly spoken in the LGA with Christianity as the LGA’s most practiced religion. Notable landmarks in Ibiono Ibom LGA include the Cairn of Mary Slessor at Ikot Oku and the Mary Slessor secondary school.


GEOGRAPHY OF IBIONO IBOM

Ibiono Ibom LGA covers a total area of 2761 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The area witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons and has a number of rivers and tributaries flowing within its territory. The average humidity level of Ibiono Ibom LGA is 85 percent while wind speed of the area is at an average of 10 km/h.  


ECONOMY OF IBIONO IBOM

Mineral deposits found in Ibiono Ibom LGA include crude oil and clay. The area is also popular for the cultivation of a number of crops such as oil palm and rubber. Trade also booms in the area with the LGA hosting a number of markets where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Ibiono Ibom LGA include fishing and canoe construction.

HISTORY OF IBIONO IBOM

Ibiono Ibom LGA was created from the Itu LGA in December 1996.
