About Ini Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ini local government area is in Akwa Ibom state, Southsouth geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The LGA is bordered by the Ikono and Obot Akara LGAs and by parts of Abia state. Towns and villages that make up the LGA include Iwere, Nkana, Ukwok, OdoroIkono, Ikpe, Mbonuso, Mbiabet, Itie Ikpe and Nkari. The estimated population of Ini LGA is 90,512 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Ibibio ethnic division. The Ibibio language is widely spoken in the area while the religion of Christianity is extensively practiced in the area. A number of festivals such as the Etefia festival are celebrated in Ini LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF INI

Ini LGA covers a total area of 321 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The area is heavily forested and hosts the expansive Ibam forests. The average humidity level of the LGA is 89 percent while the area also has a number of rivers and tributaries flowing through its territory.


ECONOMY OF INI

A number of mineral deposits are found in Ini LGA and these include crude oil, gold, iron ore, and limestone. Farming is also an important feature of the LGA’s economy with crops such as cocoa, cassava, plantain, banana, and rice grown in the area. Trade also booms in Ini LGA with the area hosting several markets where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities engaged in by people of Ini LGA include fishing, craftsmanship, and lumbering.

HISTORY OF INI

Ini LGA was created from the Ikono LGA in the year 1991.
