About Mbo Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Mbo local government area is domiciled in Akwa Ibom state, South-south geopolitical enclave of Nigeria. Mbo LGA shares boundaries with the Offong/Oruko, Esit Eket, and Ibeno LGAs. The towns and villages that make up Mbo LGA include Afaha okpo, Effiat, Nkwong, Ibiaku, Ikpo Ikono, Ikpa Ibom, Atanuk, and Ekpuk. The estimated population of Mbo LGA is put at 114,700 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Oron ethnic group. The Oron language is commonly spoken in the area while the religion of Christianity is widely practiced in the area. Popular traditional festivals in Mbo LGA include the Oro festival.


GEOGRAPHY OF MBO

Mbo LGA covers a total area of 365 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 25 degrees centigrade. The LGA consists of large forest reserves and has an average humidity level of 80 percent. Mbo LGA hosts several rivers and streams with an average wind speed of 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF MBO

A number of minerals such as clay and salt are found in Mbo LGA. Fishing is also an important economic activity in Mbo LGA with the area’s rivers and tributaries being rich in seafood. The LGA is also blessed with fertile soil and is a hub for the cultivation of a number of crops such as plantain, vegetables, cassava and a variety of fruits. Other important economic engagements undertaken by the people of Mbo LGA include trade, crafts making, and the construction of canoes and fishing nets.
