About Gumel Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Gumel local government area is in Jigawa state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gumel. Gumel LGA shares borders with Gagarawa, Sule, and Tankarkar local government areas with the area comprising of towns and villages such as Jobi, Maigatari, Danzomo, Faraina, Ganjara, Kirgi, Turkushawa, and Banaga. The estimated population of Gumel LGA is 169,717 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace constituted by members of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. The Fufulde and Hausa languages are extensively spoken in the area while Islam is commonly practiced in the LGA. Notable landmarks in Gumel LGA include the Gumel General Hospital and the Jigawa state College of Education. Gumel LGA is home to the illustrious Gumel Emirate.

Gumel LGA falls under the tropical climate and witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of Gumel LGA is 34 degrees centrigrade while the average wind speed in the area is 11 km/h.


ECONOMY OF GUMEL

Agriculture is the main source of income for the dwellers of Gumel LGA with a variety of crops such as groundnut, millet, and sorghum grown in substantially large quantities in the area. The area is also known for the rearing of a number of animals such as camels, donkeys, and sheep. Gumel LGA hosts a number of markets where a wide range of commodities are sold and bought.
