Gwaram

Gwaram local government area is situated in Jigawa state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gwaram. The LGA is made up of a number of towns and villages which include Fagam, Barebari, Gadama, Kwarko, Tsangarwa, Yayari, Rabadi, and Kwandako. The estimated population of Gwaram LGA is 139,532 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being from the Fulani ethnic group. The Hausa and Fufulde languages are commonly spoken in the area while Islam and Christianity are the widely practiced religions in the LGA. Notable landmarks in Gwaram LGA include the Government Day Arabic Senior Secondary School.

GEOGRAPHY OF GWARAM

Gwaram LGA occupies a total area of 1912 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 34 degrees centigrade. The topography of the area is characterized by the presence of several hills of varying elevations. The area also hosts a number of rivers and tributaries. The average humidity level in Gwaram LGA is 25 percent.

ECONOMY OF GWARAM

Agrculture is the major economic activity in Gwaram LGA. A number of crops such as cassava and date palm are grown in fairly large quantities in the area while Animals such as rams, camels and horses are reared in the LGA. Gwaram LGA is also rich in minerals such as black clay, quartz, tin, gum Arabic, and Kaolin. Gwaram LGA also hosts a number of markets such as the Basirka and the Sara markets. Other important economic enterprises undertaken by the dwellers of Gwaram LGA include fishing, handcraft, and hunting.

Gwaram LGA was created in the year 1989 from the Birnin-kudu LGA.
