About Gwiwa Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Gwiwa local government area is in Jigawa state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gwiwa. Towns and villages that make up Gwiwa LGA include Buntusu, Shafe, Guntai, Darina, Korau, Daabi, Yola, and Korayel. The estimated population of Gwiwa LGA is 178,903 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Hausa and the Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa and Fufulde languages are commonly spoken in the area while Islam is the widely practiced religion in the LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF GWIWA

Gwiwa LGA covers a total area of 450 square kilometres while the average temperature of the area is 33 degrees centigrade. The average wind speed in the area is 10 km/h while the average humidity level of the LGA is 18 percent. The landscape of the area is characterized by scattered sand dunes.


ECONOMY OF GWIWA

Gwiwa LGA is known for the cultivation of a number of crops with the area also being a hub for the rearing of a number of animals such as camels and horses. The LGA also hosts several markets such as the Furji market where a variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Gwiwa LGA include pottery, hunting and craftsmanship.

Gwiwa LGA was created in the year 1992.
