About Funtua Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Funtua local government area is in Katsina state which is situated in the Northwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria. The headquarters of the LGA are in the town of Funtua while several towns and villages such as Zamfarawa, Danlayi, Gibauna, Gwaigwaye, Dukawa, Dukke, Maska, and Gardawa make up the LGA. Funtua LGA shares borders with Giwa, Bakori, Danja, Faskari, and Dandume LGAs. Funtua LGA is also the headquarters of the Katsina South senatorial zone and boasts a population of 159,603 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s populace being members of the Fulani and Hausa ethnic groups. The Fufulde and Hausa languages are commonly spoken in the area while Islam is the widely practiced religion in the area. Notable landmarks in the area include the Imam Saudu College of Education and the Funtua textiles limited.


GEOGRAPHY OF FUNTUA

Funtua LGA covers a total area of 448 square kilometres and is the second largest LGA in the state. The area witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the area is 34 degrees centigrade while the humidity level of the area averages 24 percent.


ECONOMY OF FUNTUA

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Funtua LGA with crops such as onions, watermelons, groundnut, and rice grown in the area. The area is also known for the rearing of a number of animals such as cows, rams, and donkeys. Other important economic activities undertaken by the inhabitants of Funtua LGA include pottery, hunting, and weaving of mats and baskets.

Funtua LGA was created in the year 1976.
