About Matazu Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Matazu local government area is in Katsina state, North-west Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Matazu. Matazu LGA is a part of the Katsina Emirate and comprises of several towns and villages such as Dissi, Jataka, Sayaya, Kogari, Gwarjo, Gyazawa, Mazoji, and Jumawa. The estimated population of Matazu LGA is put at 183,945 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Fulani ethnic group. The Fufulde language is commonly spoken in the area while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF MATAZU

Matazu LGA covers a total area of 503 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 33 degrees centigrade. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The total precipitation in Matazu LGA is put at 900 mm of rainfall per annum while the average wind speed in the area is put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF MATAZU

Trade flourishes in Matazu LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the popular Mazoji market where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Farming is also a key activity in Matazu LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a variety of crops. Other important economic activities in Matazu LGA include animal rearing and pottery.

Matazu LGA was created in the year 1991.
