About Irewole Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Irewole local government area is in Osun state, Southwest geopolitical zone of Nigeria and has headquarters in the town of Ikire. Irewole LGA shares borders with the Ayedaade, Ife North, Egbeda, and Isokan LGAs. Several towns and villages make up Irewole LGA and these include Bamgbola, Arinkin, Oloowa, Wasinmi, Majeroku, Fidiwo, Molarere, and Ikire. The estimated population of Irewole LGA is  104,551 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s population comprising of members of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is commonly spoken in Irewole LGA while Christianity and Islam are the widely practiced religions in the area. Notable landmarks in Irewole LGA include the Osun state University Ikire and the General Hospital Ikire.


GEOGRAPHY OF IREWOLE

Irewole LGA covers a total area of 271 square kilometres and falls within the rainforest zone. The average temperature of the LGA is 27 degrees centigrade with the average humidity level of the area put at 66 percent.


ECONOMY OF IREWOLE

Irewole LGA is majorly an agrarian society and has crops such as plantain, banana, cocoa, pepper, and maize grown in the area. Trade also flourishes in the LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Obada market in Ikire where a wide variety of commodities are bought and sold. Other important economic activities in Irewole LGA include craftsmanship, woodwork, and blacksmithing.

HISTORY OF IREWOLE

Irewole LGA was created in the year 1976. The Ayedaade LGA was carved out of the area in 1989 while the Isokan LGA was removed out of Irewole LGA in the year 1996.
