About Osun State

Osun state is found in the SouthWest  geopolitical zone of Nigeria and is bordered by Kwara, Ekiti, Ondo, Ogun and Oyo. Osogbo is the state’s capital while other prominent towns include Ede, Iwo, Ejigbio, Ilesa and Esa-oke. Osun State has a total of 30 LGAs which include Atakumosa east, Atakumosa west, Ayedaade, Ayedire, Boluwaduro, Boripe, Ede North, Ede south, Egbedore, Ejigbo, Ife central, Ife east, Ife North, Ife south, Ifedayo, Ifelodun, Ila, Ilesa East, Ilesa west, Irepodun, Irewole, Isokan, Iwo, Obokun, Odo Otin, Ola Oluwa, Olorunda, Oriade, Orolu, and Osogbo with an estimated total population of 3,423, 538 individuals.

Majority of the population of Osun state are either Muslims, Christians or traditionalists. The dominant tribe is the Yoruba and Osun State also boasts of the very prominent town of Ile Ife which is home to the renowned Obafemi  Awolowo University and is also seen as the bedrock of the religious and political evolution of the Yoruba people. Tertiary Institutions found in Osun state include the Joseph Ayo Babalola University Ilesa, Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Osogbo, Obafemi Awolowo University Ile ife, Osun state College of Education (Technical ) Esa Oke, Osun state Polytechnic Iree, Osun state University Osogbo, Federal Polytechnic Ede, Adeleke University Ede, Al- Ummah College of Education Iwo, Bowen University Iwo, Fountain University Osogbo, The Polytechnic Ile-Ife, and the Living Spring College of Technology and Innovation Osogbo. 

Osun state is home to several delicacies which include the very popular Eko and Efo-riro dish. Tourist attractions found in Osun state include the Osun Osogbo Sacred grove which is a UNESCO heritage site, the Enuwa square, Oluminrin waterfalls Erin Ijesha, Ooni's Palace Ile-Ife, Oranniyan staff, Osogbo Arts and metal works, Ataoja Royal Palace, Museum of Arts Osogbo, African heritage gallery Osogbo, Okonf Rao Kawawa, Genesis Gallery Osogbo, Erinle Shrine Ilobu, Mbari- Mbayo heritage, Kiriji warsite Igbajo, Atamora Rock Scenery Iwo, Ayinkunkun Nigba waterfall Oke-Ila, Obalufon shrine Ifon-Osun, and the Ife Museum. Festivals held in Osun state include the Egungun, Osun Osogbo, Olojo and the Sango festivals.

GEOGRAPHY OF OSUN STATE

Osun State has a total area of 9,251 km squared with two distinct seasons; the dry and the rainy seasons with average annual precipitation of 2250 mm and an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade.

Humidity is at 41 percent with the state falling under the Tropical savannah climate.


ECONOMY OF OSUN STATE

Osun state is an Agricultural and commercial state known for crops such as cassava, cocoa and rice. Prominent markets such as the Ayegbaju international market, Oja Oba market Osogbo, Oranran market, Aje international market, Oluode market Osogbo, Alamisi market Ikirun, Oja Obi market Ila-Orangun, Sabo market Ile-Ife, Ilesha market, Owena market, Timi market, Orile owu market, Ikire market and the Atakumosa Market in Ilesa attract thousands of buyers and sellers of diverse commodities and contributes to the economy of the state.

Mineral resources found in Osun state include Gold, Talc, feldspar, Cassiterite, Columbite, Granite, Mica, Iron Ore, Kaolin, Tourmaline, Aquamarine, Ilmenite, Dolomite, Clay, Quartz, and Limestone.

HISTORY OF OSUN STATE

Osun state was created in August 1991 out of the old Oyo state by the General Ibrahim Babangida military Administration . The state has had a number of governors/administrators and these include

Anthony Udofia- 1993-1996

Anthony Obi- 1996-1998

Theophilus Bamigboye- 1998-1999

Adebisi Akande- 1999-20003

Rauf Aregbesola- 2010-date.
