About Iwo Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Iwo local government area is situated in Osun state, South-west geopolitical zone of Nigeria with its headquarters in the town of Iwo. The LGA is made up of a number of towns and villages which include Agberire, Ikolaba, Yakoyo, Osunjobi, Motunase, Alebiosu, Fagbayibi, and Lemomu. The estimated population of Iwo LGA is 195,882 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers made up of people from the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is extensively spoken in the area while Christianity and islam are the widely practiced religions in the LGA. Iwo LGA has a number of traditional rulers with the most prominent being the Oluwo of Iwo who superintends over the traditional affairs of the people of the LGA. Prominent festivals held in Iwo LGA include the Egungun festival while the notable landmarks in the area include the Iwo Grammar school and the Bowen University.


GEOGRAPHY OF IWO

Iwo LGA covers a total area of 245 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 27 degrees centigrade. The LGA falls under the Tropical Savannah climate and has an average humidity level of 69 percent.  The total precipitation in Iwo is estimated at 1700 mm of rainfall per annum.


ECONOMY OF IWO

Farming is an integral part of the economic lifestyle of the dwellers of Iwo LGA with the area known for the cultivation of a number of crops such as cocoa, yam, oil palm, and cassava. Trade is also a popular enterprise in Iwo LGA with the area hosting a number of markets such as the Odo-ori market which offer shoppers a plethora of commodities to buy from. Other important economic enterprises engaged in by the people of Iwo LGA include hunting and textile production and weaving.
