About Akinyele Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Akinyele local government is located within the town of Ibadan in Oyo state, Southwest Nigeria. Akinyele LGA was created in the year 1976 from the Ibadan Municipal area and has its headquarters in the Moniya district of Ibadan town. Akinyele LGA is bordered by the Afijio , Lagelu, Ido, and Ibadan North LGAs. Akinyele local government area comprises of areas such as Ajibode, Mokankan, Okeona, Olugbode, Igboloyin, Onikarahun, and Motunde.

The LGA has an estimated population of 206,444 dwellers with the vast majority being members of the Yoruba tribe. Christianity and Islam are the widely practiced religions while Yoruba and English are commonly spoken languages. Akinyele has a rich cultural heritage with the prestigious Oke Ibadan festival held in the area. Interesting landmarks within Akinyele LGA include the Nigerian Institute of Social and Economic Research, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the Federal School of Statistics, and the Bowen’s tomb.


GEOGRAPHY OF AKINYELE

Akinyele LGA covers a total area of 464 km squared and has a humidity of 63 percent. The average temperature of the area is 29 degrees centigrade while the major seasons are the dry and rainy seasons. 


ECONOMY OF AKINYELE

Agriculture is a major economic engagement of the inhabitants of Akinyele LGA with crops such as cocoa, maize, and cocoyam grown in appreciable quantities.
