About Ona-ara Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Ona ara local government area is domiciled in Oyo state, South-west Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Akanran. Ona ara LGA shares boundaries with Egbede, Oluyole, Ibadan south-east LGAs and with parts of Ogun and Osun state. Towns and villages that make up Ona ara LGA include Gbedun, Olunloyo, Araromi, Amuloko, Akanran, Olorunsogo, Foworogun, Olosunde, and Gbada Efon. The current estimated population of Ona ara LGA is put at 229,715 inhabitants with the vast majority of the area’s dwellers being members of the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is commonly spoken in Ona ara LGA while the religions of Christianity and Islam are practiced in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF ONA-ARA

Ona ara LGA covers a total area of 290 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 28 degrees centigrade. The LGA witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons with the average wind speed in the area put at 10 km/h.


ECONOMY OF ONA-ARA

Agriculture is the major occupation of the people of Ona ara LGA with crops such as cocoa, kolanut, cashew, as well as a variety of fruits grown in the area. Trade also flourishes in Ona ara LGA with the LGA hosting several markets where a variety of goods and services are exchanged. Other important economic enterprises undertaken by the people of Ona ara LGA include textile weaving and dyeing, hunting, craftsmanship, and wood carving.

HISTORY OF ONA-ARA

Ona ara LGA was created in 1989 from the Oluyole LGA.
