About Egbeda Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Egbeda local government area is in Oyo state, Southwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Egbeda . The LGA comprises of several towns and villages which include Awaye, Olode, Lamuregun, Olorisaoko, Osegere, Owoboale, Erunmu, and Ayede. The population of Egbeda LGA is estimated at 124,618 inhabitants with the dominant tribal affiliation being the Yoruba ethnic group. The Yoruba language is widely spoken in the area while the religions of Islam and Christianity are widely practiced in the LGA. The traditional administrator of Egbeda LGA is the Elegbeda af Egbeda.


GEOGRAPHY OF EGBEDA

Egbeda local government area sits on a total area measuring 191 square kilometres and witnesses two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The average temperature of the area is 28 degrees centigrade while the average wind speed in the area is 12 km/h.


ECONOMY OF EGBEDA

Egbeda is home to a vibrant trade sector with the area hosting several markets which include the Bola Ige international market where dwellers of the LGA and surrounding environs come to exchange a plethora of goods and services.  Farming is also a key economic enterprise in Egbeda LGA with crops such as cocoa, coconut, and cocoyam grown in substantially large quantities. The LGA also has a Dry seaport located at Erunmu.

HISTORY OF EGBEDA

Egbeda local government area was created in 1989 from the Lagelu local government area.
