About Garko Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Garko local government area is situated in Kano state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Garko. The LGA comprises of several towns and villages such as Kawo, Garinali, Yarka, Buda, Zakarawa, Kafin malamai, Gurjiya, and Makadi. The estimated population of Garko local government area is 181, 532 inhabitants with the majority of the area’s inhabitants being members of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic divisions. The widely spoken languages in Garko LGA include the Hausa and the Fufulde languages while Islam is extensively practiced in the area.


GEOGRAPHY OF GARKO

Garko LGA covers a total area of 450 square kilometres and witnesses two major seasons which are the rainy and the dry seasons. The average temperature of the LGA is 33 degrees centigrade while the total annual precipitation of the area is at an average of 1000 mm per annum. The wind speed in Garko LGA averages 12 km/h.


ECONOMY OF GARKO

The majority of the population of Garko LGA are farmers and a number of crops such as jamilah rice, millet, brown beans, sorghum, and sweet potatoes are grown in the area. The area also has a vibrant trade sector with the LGA hosting a number of markets which provide platforms for the exchange of a variety of goods and services by the residents of the area; these markets include the Garko main market.  Other important economic activities undertaken by the dwellers of Garko LGA include cattle rearing, hunting, and pottery.
