About Garun Malam Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Garun mallam is one of the fourty-four local government areas in Kano state, Northwest Nigeria with the headquarters of the LGA residing in the town of Garun Mallam. Several towns and villages make up Garun Mallam and these include Agawa, Zango, Jobawa, Yanabawa, Dumati, Chiromawa, Yadakwari, and Garun Babba. The estimated population of Garun Mallam LGA is 176,802 inhabitants with the area’s most prominent inhabitants being members of the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. The major languages spoken in the area are Hausa and Fufulde while Islam is the most practiced religion in the area. Notable landmarks in Garun Mallam LGA include the Kano seed processing Center in Kadawa.


GEOGRAPHY OF GARUN MALAM

Garun Mallam LGA covers a total area of 214 square kilometres and has an average temperature of 34 degrees centigrade. The area experiences two major seasons which are the dry and the rainy season. The total rainfall of the area is at an average of 950 mm per annum while the humidity level of the LGA averages 19 percent.


ECONOMY OF GARUN MALAM

Farming is the major occupation of the people of Garun Mallam with a number of crops such as wheat, tomato, and rice grown in substantially large quantities within the area. The area also has a vibrant trade sector with the LGA hosting a number of markets such as the Kadawa tomato market. Other important economic enterprises undertaken by the residents of Garun Mallam LGA include textile weaving and dyeing, hunting and wood carving.
