About Gaya Local Government Area (L.G.A)

Gaya local government area is one of the forty-four LGAs in Kano state, Northwest Nigeria and has its headquarters in the town of Gaya. Gaya LGA is made up of several towns and villages such as Amarawa, Gomo,Fani Dau, Kazurawa, Shagogo, Zanbur, Moda, Jobe, and Gamoji. The Sarkin Gaya is widely considered as the traditional administrator of Gaya LGA. The estimated population of Gaya LGA is 173,606 dwellers with the majority of the area’s populace comprising of people from the Hausa and Fulani ethnic groups. The Hausa and Fufulde languages are extensively spoken in the area while the religion of Islam is widely practiced in the LGA.


GEOGRAPHY OF GAYA

Gaya LGA covers a total area of 613 square kilometres and witnesses two distinct seasons which are the dry and the rainy seasons. The LGA has an elevation of about 415 meters above sea level while the average temperature of the area is 33 degrees centigrade. The wind speed in Gaya LGA is at an average of 12 km/h.


ECONOMY OF GAYA

Farming is the major occupation of the inhabitants of Gaya LGA with crops such as watermelons, sorghum, rice and cucumbers grown in the area. Cattle rearing is also a key feature of the economic activities in the LGA. Trade also booms in Gaya LGA with the area playing host to a number of markets which afford the residents of the LGA platforms to buy and sell a plethora of commodities.

Gaya local government area was created in the year 1976.
